THE INITIATIVE PROMOTER’S PERSPECTIVE

Background

A three2dyear project during years 2003 2006. The pupils in Pello school start learning in three languages so that in the first two grades the proportion of foreign2dlanguage instruction (English) is 30 25 whereas the proportion of the second national language (Swedish) is 25 and that of the mother tongue 50 25. This way the basic skills in mother tongue are also ensured. In grades three and four2c the teaching of mother tongue increases.

Objectives

To offer learning opprotunities to study both the mother tongue (Finnish)and the second national language (Swedish) as well as English. The proportion of English and Swedish is bigger than in normal curriculum.

Approach

To teach Swedish and English in the first two grades of the comprehensive school in a more extensive way than in a normal school teaching.

THE NATIONAL AGENCY’S PERSPECTIVE

Motivations

The Pello school has experimented a method of teaching three languages with the Swedish speaking Pello skolan. The teaching covers the Finnish language (which is the pupils'moteher tongue) Swedish abd English. The project that is focused at teaching neighboroughing languages (Finnish and Swedish)supports the second language learning in Pello and it is related to a lengthy development and research work.
