Using Film to Develop Motivation and Confidence in Listening and Speaking

Recognising the importance of a creative, varied and exciting curriculum that reflects the interests and experience of 15 and 16 year old learners, Millais School in Horsham and Imberhorne School in East Grinstead chose film as the context for a GCSE controlled assessment in speaking. Units of work were created in French and German, leading to an assessment task which motivated learners and addressed the requirements of the examining body. The German film ‘Sommer’, helped learners focus on the topics of family and relationships as well media, while the French film, ‘Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis’, was used to address one’s home town and local area
