Translation day

Translation teachers at the University of Ostrava Faculty of Arts have been organising an international student translation competition since 2005. The competition has two categories: literary and non-literary translation from a foreign language into one's mother tongue. The entrants select the translated text themselves, but the size is set – seven to ten pages of prose or 40 to 50 verses for poetry. The main event of the competition is Translation Day, which this year fell on 17 March. Aside from providing a venue for announcing the winners, this event also allows the participants to debate about the fine points of translation and interpreting.
