Swedish for immigrants at Vuxenutbildningen in Partille

The project is an individualized model for students with little or no schooling. The students create their own materials by writing and talking the Swedish they hear around them. The semester is divided thematically and every week there is a study related to the current theme. They visit shops or cafes in the neighborhood. They go to museums, different places of work or enterprises. The model has helped the students to make rapid progress, sense of responsibility and influence over their own learning process and greater confidence and motivation.

Full Description

The project is a model for learning Swedish for students with little or no schooling. The students create their own materials by writing and using the Swedish they hear around them.
Study visits are carefully planned. First the teacher discuss and plan the weekly study and field trips. After that each group have different tasks depending on their language level. For example, some learn new words and expressions and some work with dialogues.
The teachers make documentations of the visits as photos or video films. After the study visits students write their own texts about the visit or make a video or a slide show.

An important part of the model is that the students use the computer in their daily work. Besides listening to the scanned texts and dialogues, pronunciation practice can be done in what is called pronunciation portfolio. The students read the texts on the computer and receive individual attention from the teacher. The model with a pronunciation portfolio has given the students awareness of their own pronunciation skills.
