LiBRe – Little Bookworm Reading Club. Lesefördwerung für mehrsprachige Grundschulkinder
Little Bookworm Reading Club targets the improvement of reading skills and reading motivation of primary school children with multilingual backgrounds in the target language English. The club addresses to children for whom English is already the second foreign language since a language other than German is spoken in their families. The club ties in with the results of the IGLU study of 2006 in which the coherence of social origin, migration background and low reading skills were detected. As a counteraction the children are supposed to experience early learning success and develop the confidence to open up new spheres of life via English children books. In April 2011 the reading club was introduced in fourth grade at Walther Hartmann Schule in Remscheid. The participating children (with six different mother tongues) read authentic English texts which student teachers chose and adapted. The students exchange their experiences concerning innovative ways of teaching reading skills and appropriate children books with fellow students who are doing a traineeship at schools in Great Britain at the same time
