On the snail trail
On the Snail Trail provided authentic and creative material to support language learning in Key Stage 2 (10-11 years of age), and to make effective links across the curriculum and between Beford's lower and middle schools. It provided teachers with resources to work collaboratively across year groups and languages and supports transition between schools. Project teaching resources for Years 3 and 4 focused on snails as a theme for integrating language learning with mathematics. Resources include books, worksheets and a song. In Years 5 and 6, the link was between language learning and science, and resources included multilingual materials developed by the Open University and the Association of Science Education, as well as field research ideas. All materials are in French, Spanish, German and Italian – an important heritage language in Bedford – and are designed to be usable with other languages. The project was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Education, University of Worcester. The projectreached over 300 learners in four lower schools (up to Year 4) and two middle schools (Years 5 and 6).
