THE INITIATIVE PROMOTER’S PERSPECTIVE

Background

The project started as an experimentation in 1987 with the permission of the Finnish National Board of Education. In Vaasa, language immersion starts in day-care centre with 5-year-old children. The teaching continues throughout the basic education grades 1-9. Language immersion is a permanent work and will continue further.

Objectives

To develop the methods of the language immersion of Swedish among the children from 5 years old up to the last grade of the comprehensive school (pupils of 15 years old).

Approach

The Finnish version (adapted from the Canadian model) of the early Swedish language immersion is an educational programme that targets Finnish-speaking children and it's object is to increase bi- and multilingualism.

THE NATIONAL AGENCY’S PERSPECTIVE

Motivations

The method of language immersion has been brought into practice by the Education Department of the City of Vaasa together with the University of Vaasa.
Early teaching of Swedish with the methods of language immersion has developed the diadactics of early language learning and has brought also other stimulus for the second national language teaching.
The project has had a positive impact on attitudes towards language learning by bringing closer the Finnish and Swedish speaking people. It has had a significant impact on language politics in bilingual regions.
