The Ambassador of Languages of the Year 2011
Brief description
In 2011 Lithuanian NA organized The European Language Label competition called “The Ambassador of Languages of the Year 2011”. The aim of the competition was to select a business enterprise or public company that demonstrates innovative and engaging policy of language learning and usage. The selection of the ELL as “The Ambassador of Languages of the Year 2011” was based on the following criteria: European priorities for the 2010-2011 Label campaigns (“Language learning in the community“ and “Language skills as a preparation for work”), ability to act as the ambassador of languages and attitude of the applicant to the language policy. JSC “WorldOne” was selected as “The Ambassador of Languages of the Year 2011”. JSC “WorldOne” is an international market research company in global healthcare. Their office has more that 200 employees in Lithuania and they all work in multilingual environment where they use informal language learning. The company is using 9 different working languages. As a part of Ambassadors' activities, the representative of the Ambassador of Languages of the Year 2011 attended the International Scientific Conference “Multilingualism and Language Studies in Higher Education” at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania, on the 8-10th of December, 2011. He participated in the Round table discussion: Multilingualism: possibility, necessity or threat? JSC "WorldOne" will continue the Ambassador's of the Languages activities until the new Ambassador of the Languages will be selected.

THE INITIATIVE PROMOTER’S PERSPECTIVE

Background

The Ambassador of languages of the Year in 2011 was given to a joint company "WorldOne - in international market research company in global healthcare. According to Mr Thomas Petkevicius, Call Centre Manager" the company intended to make its activities more visible in Lithuania

Objectives

The company's staff policy focuses on creating a flexible and democratic working environment for every employee ( both local and foreign); language and communication skills being one of the indispensable features of the company's everyday work.

Approach

The company administration puts more effort in creating a sensible supportive multilingual environment rather that organising short-term language courses; the language and communication skills are fostered in everyday activities

Results

The company staff ( local lithuanians and foreigners) flexibly operate in 9 languages.

Message: Languages at the work place are extremely important taking into consideration the free movement of labour force. More companies and organisations should encourage this, if possible.
